Since my childhood, nature left a deep impact on me, hence, there are certain tendencies in my work, that are related to nature. Chinese classical wash paintings’ subjects and philosophy inspired me a lot. I started painting Indian flora and fauna in Chinese format. I tried capturing the change in season through the differences in flora around me, in my work.
Parallel to this I used to draw a lot of cartoons also. The political scenario of our country can be traced in my cartoons. The comic approach of cartoons used to clash with my other kinds of serious works (nature-based), so I wanted to create a bridge in between them. Thereafter I tried putting my paintings and illustrations/cartoons on same plane. I tried picking up serious subjects and portrayed in a comical way through the characters of my cartoons. Also, the deep observation of nature from my earlier works, I started to merge it with the cartoons in my recent works.
Chinese wash and Japanese woodblock print have influnced me a lot.
I was also inspired by the compositional arrangements of Indian miniature paintings. A. Ramachandran’s works helped me gain the design aspect of colors. Bright and clashing colors, and the temperament of my thought process also remains the same as his.
My works are characterized by solitude, romance and humorous undertone. Sometimes my activities become my subject of work as I try to capture the hobbies and idle moments in various situations of life. There are certain detailing in my work, that engraves my observation, and I try juxtaposing them with my fantasies, thus giving it a magic realism and surreal approach.
